What are the 5 most common clothing fabrics?
by Penny Farnsworth

Many people simply do not know how many different fabrics there are that go into making your clothes – even more go into making your whole wardrobe of clothes! You might be familiar with Cotton, most likely Polyester too, but how about Rayon, Acrylic or Acetate? Today I’m going to explore the most commonly used fabrics in our clothing and give you a little bit of information about each.

1. Cotton – The most common fabric; A natural fiber which grows around cotton plant seeds. The fiber is gathered into large bales and then separated by grades before it is shipped to textile factories where it is spun into long and continuous threads. After being spun into thread it is gathered onto large spindles and then stored in a factory until it is needed for use.

2. Polyester – The second most commonly used fabric in clothes; a strong synthetic fabric which is derived from synthetic fibres of Polyethylene Terephthalate and is essentially a plastic. Very commonly you will find that Polyester is mixed with other fabrics (most commonly Cotton) which helps to improve breathability and anti-creasing properties of the fabric. Polyester is also used to make bottles – So your clothes and that bottle of soda aren’t too different are they?

3. Linen is another of the top fabrics; made from fibers of the flax plant and is the oldest used fabric today. While it is a commonly used fabric, it is expensive to make and so usually only makes up for a small part of clothes, or makes up for the majority of small clothes such as vests, etc.

4. Nylon, another Polymer (plastic) which is commonly used for clothing as a replacement for silk. Nylon fabric doesn’t absorb moisture and it dries quickly and easily so is often used for coats.

5. Rayon is an odd material which is made from natural polymers, so it’s more of a cross between a synthetic and natural fiber rather than one or the other. It was developed as a cheaper alternative to silk and requires A LOT of processing to be made.
